West Sacramento

West Sacramento proudly stands on the west bank of the Sacramento River, opposite Sacramento and the State Capitol. Like its cross-river neighbor, West Sacramento traces its origin to the 1849 Gold Rush. The City’s protected location allowed it to evolve independently, while preserving its small town character.

In 1987, West Sacramento history took a purposeful direction when citizens voted to incorporate, establishing the state’s 444th city – thus opening an exciting era turning West Sacramento into a premiere business and living environment.

Following incorporation as a city in 1987, West Sacramento began planning for quality growth and development by adopting its first general plan. The plan provided direction for land use, housing transportation, public facilities, recreational and cultural resources, health and safety, urban structure and design and childcare.

In the early 1990’s, the city of West Sacramento adopted a number of finer-grained plans backed by extensive community involvement, including the West Capitol Avenue Action Plan. These plans facilitate the positive change envisioned for the future of West Sacramento.

More information on the City of West Sacramento is available from the City of West Sacramento website.
