About the Plan

The West Capitol Streetscape Master Plan process provides an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of West Sacramento. The plan will build upon the 1992 West Capitol Avenue Action Plan (.pdf, 9mb) and the 2004 West Capitol Implementation Strategy (.pdf, 6mb). Master planning of West Capitol Avenue began in November 2005, and is scheduled to be completed in Fall 2006.

Well-planned, pedestrian friendly streets encourage walking, gather and shopping and revitalize urban areas. The West Capitol Avenue Streetscape Master Plan will guide phased improvements along the two-mile segment of the avenue that is the heart of the community. The plan will include designs for wider sidewalks, new trees and landscaping, and pedestrian and bicycle paths.

Urban design guidelines for West Capitol Avenue will provide more specific images and standards for site design, building placement, and architectural features for new and remodeled properties. The City's infrastructure plans will ensure that underground utilities like sewer, water, and storm drainage are adequate for new development.

Clear plans and guidelines will help developers, property owners, investors, consultants, and staff redevelop of the Avenue - fulfilling the vision of West Capitol Avenue as the community downtown.
